A note from the workshop

Kone,

E2 Hijaz Kone is not an easy instrument — and that is exactly why it is special. A deep E2 ding under a Hijaz layout, with those augmented seconds that fight you at every pass. Reaching this timbre, this balance from grave to bright, is rare; the note field simply refuses to sit still.

It carries a voice you will not find twice. Since it left the bench it has travelled, been played hard, and been cared for by other great hands along the way.

Below is its full record — every note, its sound fingerprint, the modes hiding inside it, and where it has been. From here, its story is yours to keep writing.

Modes, scales & chords

One shell, more than one world. Start the same notes from a different root and the mood changes.

Phrygian-dominant colour — Andalusian, Middle-Eastern, flamenco. The augmented second between F and G♯ is its signature: exotic, tense, unmistakable.

Begin on A3 and a second scale wakes up inside the same instrument — a raised, restless minor with an Eastern-European ache. The mode this handpan was built to reveal.

How it was born

Forming

Shells for a low voice

A deep E2 ding needs a large, thick body — the shells are drawn and joined to hold that fundamental.

Note field

A demanding Hijaz layout

The augmented seconds of Hijaz are unforgiving to shape and tune. This particular timbre took many passes to win.

Thermal

Bake & settling

Oven treatment locks the tuning; the steel relaxes and the 16 notes settle into place.
